Strictly Come Dancing Undergoes Major Professional Dancer Shakeup
Former Strictly Come Dancing professional Michelle Tsiakkas has publicly expressed her disappointment after being dropped from the BBC show, stating she 'wished she'd had more time' to showcase her talents. The dancer is one of five professionals who have been axed from the lineup in what industry insiders are describing as a 'bloodbath' revamp.
Five Professional Dancers Cut in Dramatic Overhaul
The BBC is implementing a drastic overhaul of its flagship dance competition, with Michelle Tsiakkas joining fellow professionals Karen Hauer (43), Nadiya Bychkova (36), Luba Mushtuk (36), and Gorka Marquez (35) in being removed from the show. This significant shakeup appears designed to distance Strictly Come Dancing from recent controversies and scandals that have plagued the programme.
After initially discussing her departure in a weekend interview, Michelle confirmed the news officially through a lengthy and emotional Instagram post on Tuesday. The devastated star described enduring an 'emotional time' following her dismissal but acknowledged she never assumed her position on the show was 'guaranteed.'
Michelle Tsiakkas' Heartfelt Farewell Message
In her comprehensive social media statement, Michelle wrote: 'Hi everyone, I wanted to share with you. I won't be returning to Strictly this year. This has been an emotional time for me because Strictly has been a big part of my life, not just for the past four years but for as long as I can remember.'
She continued: 'Of course, as professionals on the show we can never assume our places are guaranteed, but I hoped I have more time. I wish I could have shown you more of what I can do, but I'm grateful for every experience and every chance I had to share my passion and connect with the audience.'
The dancer also revealed she has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the upcoming Pro Tour in May, explaining she wouldn't be able to deliver her best performance for audiences during this challenging period.
Strictly Bosses Issue Official Statement
Strictly Come Dancing producers shared their own statement regarding Michelle's departure, praising her contributions to the programme. The official Instagram post stated: 'Thank you to Michelle Tsiakkas for everything she has brought to Strictly Come Dancing over the past four series.'
The message continued: 'During her time on the show, Michelle has delivered some excellent performances, whether in the series' group routines, alongside guest music artists, or with celebrity partners across the main series and the Christmas special whom she has always taught with professionalism, respect and kindness.'
Emotional Interview Reveals Dismissal Details
In her first interview since the dismissal, Michelle described to The Sun newspaper how she learned about her axe during a brief 30-minute video call with show bosses. She recalled bursting into tears immediately after receiving the devastating news.
'It felt like my world was falling apart, my dream was shattered,' Michelle revealed. 'I gave my everything to the show for the four years - it was my whole life. It felt out of the blue. It was very tough. I was heartbroken. I went through so many emotions. I gave my life to Strictly.'
The professional dancer expressed particular frustration that she wasn't provided with a clear reason for her dismissal, making the situation 'hard to digest.' She speculated about potential motivations behind the sweeping changes, suggesting: 'I do wonder if they want to change so much because of the scandals in the past.'
Connection to Previous Controversies
Michelle specifically addressed whether her departure might be connected to her former celebrity partner Jamie Borthwick's controversy during their time on the show. The EastEnders actor was suspended and subsequently axed from his soap opera role after being filmed using a disabled slur during his Strictly participation.
Jamie issued a public apology at the time, stating he hadn't fully understood the derogatory nature of the term he used and expressing deep embarrassment upon learning its meaning. Michelle clarified: 'I don't think I was punished for Jamie's wrongdoing because that wouldn't be right. The pros have no power over the celebs.'
Looking Toward Future Opportunities
Despite her disappointment, Michelle concluded her Instagram message on a positive note, writing: 'Dance is a huge part of who I am, and that will never change. I'm excited for a fresh chapter and a new journey, which I hope you'll continue with me on.'
She expressed gratitude to her supporters, fellow professionals, and the extensive production team behind Strictly Come Dancing, acknowledging the deep personal connections formed during her four years on the popular television programme.
