Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One and iPlayer on 14 September 2024, marking its 20th anniversary with a series of major format changes. The professional dancers have revealed new details about the upcoming series, including alterations to the show's structure and production elements.
In a significant shift, the show will introduce advanced technology such as holograms and AI to enhance performances. One professional dancer commented, 'I can't wait for the show to start using things like holograms and AI. It'll be tricky to know what's real and what's not, but that might be the next technical step.' However, they emphasised that the core format—watching dances that people love—will remain unchanged.
The dancers also shared their pre-show rituals. One revealed, 'I probably talk to my family more on a Saturday than at any other time, just to feel as calm as possible... I've noticed that I always give my best performance when I’m tired. So if I’m yawning before a show, I know it’s going to be a good night.' Another added, 'I try to keep things calm... My only concern is them [the celebrity partner]. The sooner you realise it’s not about you, the easier your job becomes.'
Reflecting on the anniversary, one dancer said, 'It feels really surreal. I’ll never forget watching at home the first year when Natasha Kaplinsky won... to be part of the anniversary feels surreal. I think it's going to be a real celebration of a series.' Another noted, 'It’s been a privilege really. This is my 10th year... the show has changed my life. And it gets better every single year.'
The series promises to retain its beloved elements while adding more production value. As one dancer put it, 'Keep the format exactly the same, but just add even more to the production.' Strictly 2024 will air from 14 September, with the 20th anniversary series expected to be a spectacular celebration of two decades of ballroom magic.
