The first volume of Stranger Things season five concludes with a jaw-dropping revelation: Will Byers has developed his own telekinetic powers. The discovery comes during a massive set piece at the Hawkins MAC-Z military complex, which the Duffer brothers describe as the most logistically challenging sequence they have ever filmed.
In the episode titled 'Sorcerer', the Hawkins crew attempts to rescue children held by the military at the MAC-Z. Their plan goes awry when Demogorgons attack the facility, forcing a chaotic confrontation. The sequence was shot in four long takes stitched together to appear as one continuous shot, requiring weeks of rehearsals and extensive pre-visualisation.
Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, said the cast rehearsed for weeks before filming. 'We did a oner so we really had to have rehearsed it perfectly to get it done,' he explained. The scene also marks the first face-to-face encounter between the Hawkins group and Vecna since the season four finale, with Vecna emerging from the gate inside the MAC-Z.
Jamie Campbell Bower, who portrays Vecna, noted the unresolved tension between his character and Will. 'I really hope that there’s unfinished business between Will and Vecna and that that’s explored a bit more,' he said. The episode ends with Vecna massacring nearly everyone in the military complex, setting the stage for the rest of the season.
