Actress Sadie Sink has finally broken her silence on the dramatic fate of her character, Max Mayfield, in the highly anticipated fifth season of Netflix's Stranger Things. The first part of the final season landed on the streaming platform earlier this week, delivering long-awaited answers and shocking new twists.
The Major Reveal: Max's Consciousness Trapped
The cliffhanger from season four left fans on tenterhooks, with Max in a coma after a brutal encounter with the villain Vecna. Her limbs were shattered, she was left blind, and she had technically died for a moment before Eleven managed to restart her heart. In season five, episode three, the reason for her prolonged coma is dramatically unveiled: her consciousness is not simply dormant but is actively imprisoned within Vecna's mindscape.
While trapped in this realm of haunting memories, Max discovers she is not alone. She is able to make contact with Holly Wheeler, the younger sister of Mike Wheeler, after Holly is also pulled into the terrifying dimension. Sadie Sink explained the significance of this connection, stating, "Because Holly and Max have a very loose connection through Mike, Max is able to see Holly as her ticket out."

In celebration of the final season, Netflix has been releasing a special companion series titled 'Behind the Episode' on its YouTube channel, Still Watching Netflix. These features take viewers behind the scenes with the cast, directors, and creators. One crew member highlighted the impact of the episode three reveal, saying it was the first moment that made the "hairs on my neck stand up."
They added, "Here is this character who we all love and at the end of season four we weren't sure if she'd make it. When I read that it felt like, 'Okay, this show is kicking into another gear.'" Sink herself confirmed the shift in tone, admitting, "It feels a lot different than the last seasons. Yeah, it's a whole new ball game, for sure."
A Favourite Set and the Final Countdown
Sink also shared insights into filming one of the season's pivotal scenes: the moment inside the cave within Vecna's mindscape, which serves as a makeshift home for Max. She described it as one of her favourite sets to work on. "It was really fun to see how the arts department just really turned it into this weird home for Max full of things she found during her exploring through the memories," Sink said. "So yeah the cave was one of my favourite sets to film on this year for sure."
The first four episodes of Stranger Things season 5 are now streaming. Fans face a wait for the next batch of episodes, expected around Christmas, with the grand series finale scheduled to land on New Year's, bringing a story nearly a decade in the making to its ultimate conclusion.
