The scene reached its peak when Jonathan revealed he had been carrying an engagement ring. In what he termed an "un-proposal," he asked, "Nancy Wheeler, will you not marry me?" Matt Duffer explained that he and his brother Ross had known for some time that this long-running relationship would conclude. He stated that the writing team felt Nancy needed to end up on her own, independent and with the opportunity to discover herself beyond her high-school romance.
This decision also effectively closes the door on any potential reunion with Nancy's season one boyfriend, Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), despite his confessed lingering feelings. Ross Duffer added a poignant layer to the analysis, suggesting the pair's love was initially forged as a "trauma bond" after battling a Demogorgon together in the show's first season.

The Duffers' comments come after a wave of fan confusion on social media, where viewers described the proposal scene as perplexing and the conclusion badly framed.
