Netflix has added another gripping detective drama to its library: Mr Mercedes, based on Stephen King's Bill Hodges trilogy. The show originally aired on the now-defunct US channel Audience in 2017 and has earned a 91 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The series follows retired detective Bill Hodges, tormented by a serial killer through letters and emails. The Netflix logline states: 'A retired detective, haunted by a deadly crime he couldn't solve, hunts for the merciless killer who intentionally drove his car into a crowd of people.'
The cast is led by Brendan Gleeson as Bill Hodges, Harry Treadaway as Brady Hartsfield, Holland Taylor as Ida Silver, and Justine Lupe as Holly Gibney. Viewers have praised the show on social media, with one calling it 'absolutely brilliant' and another describing it as 'one of the best Stephen King adaptations'.
Despite calls for a fourth season, the show was discontinued in 2020. Critics were positive, with The Guardian calling it a 'good old-fashioned, race-against-time thriller' and The Irish Independent awarding it five stars. All three seasons are now available on Netflix.
