Jools Holland has reunited with his former band Squeeze for a special performance on his BBC show, marking their first collaboration since 1990. The legendary musician, who co-founded the band in 1974 at the age of 15, joined songwriters and guitarists Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook on Sunday's episode of Later... with Jools Holland.
A Historic Reunion
The trio performed Squeeze's 1978 debut single Take Me I'm Yours, a track that helped launch the band's illustrious career. Jools, who left Squeeze in 1980 but returned for a five-year stint in 1985, chatted with Difford and Tilbrook about their shared history and the band's enduring legacy.
During the conversation, Jools addressed speculation about a possible permanent return to Squeeze, stating: "Just because of circumstances really, it's never worked out." He revealed that there had been offers, including a US television show, but various factors prevented a full reunion. However, he expressed joy at performing Take Me I'm Yours again, saying: "We made great music together and I'm very proud to be part of it. It's great to have you here. Thank you very much for joining us."
Trixies and New Music
Difford and Tilbrook also discussed their upcoming album, Trixies, their first collection of new material in eight years. The album is a concept work set in a fictional nightclub called Trixies, with songs written by Difford at 19 and Tilbrook at 16. Jools praised their songwriting, noting: "You have a catalogue of extraordinary songs. Everybody's covered your songs... they range from songs that Burt Bacharach might have written to ones for a rock and roll band."
Other Highlights on the Show
The episode also featured a debut performance from former One Direction star Niall Horan, who sang two tracks from his forthcoming fourth album Dinner Party, including the world premiere of Tastes So Good. The new series of Later... with Jools Holland promises a stellar lineup, including James Blake, Joe Bonamassa, Ashley McBryde, Mandy, Indiana, Jocelyn Brown, Angine De Poitrine, Arlo Parks, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Ellie Goulding, Lola Young, Mike D, Mitski, Pigeon, Shania Twain, Westside Cowboy, Jessie Ware, Holly Humberstone, Jack Antonoff, Samm Henshaw, Fcukers, and many more.
The new series kicks off on Sunday at 10pm on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
