The BBC has cancelled its long-running medical drama Casualty for the next two weeks as the UEFA European Championship continues to disrupt television schedules. The show will not air on June 29 or July 6, 2024, with coverage of the football competition taking over the BBC One schedule from 4.30pm to 10.10pm on both Saturdays.
The disruption is not limited to football; Wimbledon is set to return on July 1, hinting at further scheduling chaos. Casualty's return date has not yet been announced, leaving fans frustrated.
The drama recently aired a twelve-part miniseries titled Storm Damage, featuring dramatic storylines including paramedic Teddy becoming a victim of sexual assault. Two episodes have aired so far, with newcomer Sophia Peters, played by former EastEnders star Kellie Shirley, attracting the attention of established character Dylan Keogh.
Other soaps have also been affected. ITV viewers missed Emmerdale on June 25 due to coverage of England's 0-0 draw with Slovenia, and Coronation Street was cancelled on June 26 for more Euro coverage. EastEnders moved to BBC Two on the same day due to a political debate.
The Euro 2024 has impacted other programmes including Loose Women, The Repair Shop, and Love Island.
