The long-running BBC drama Silent Witness returns for its 29th series, with the team relocating to Birmingham. Dr. Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox), Jack (David Caves), Harriet (Maggie Steed) and Kit (Fran Mills) will operate from the Sir William Bowman Centre of Excellence in the city. The move marks a new chapter for the characters, with Jack and Nikki starting married life and settling into a new home and workplace.
Emilia Fox, who has played Nikki for 21 years, said the series explores a theme of 'trust and what we can believe in'. This runs through stories involving AI, relationships, and a personal journey for Jack. Fox noted that Birmingham offers a different aesthetic feel, with its industrial buildings, canals, and nearby countryside providing striking backdrops for filming.
Fox praised the city's welcoming atmosphere and highlighted her enjoyment of exploring areas like the Jewellery Quarter and the Balti Triangle. She described the cast's working environment as supportive and fun, despite the dark subject matter, and expressed gratitude for the legacy of creator Nigel McCrery and original star Amanda Burton.
Silent Witness continues to attract millions of viewers weekly, which Fox attributes to its premise of behind-the-scenes crime solving through science and medicine, as well as its focus on human nature and justice. The new series consists of five stories across ten episodes.
