Shania Twain Biopic in the Works at Sony Pictures

Shania Twain is taking a significant step in her career following the monumental success of the Michael Jackson biopic, which has amassed over $800 million worldwide since its release. According to Deadline, the 60-year-old country music icon's life and career will soon be the focus of a new film for Sony Pictures.

Creative Team Behind the Biopic

The film will reportedly be helmed by singer and actress Leah McKendrick, who is also set to write the script. McKendrick's previous credits include the upcoming Netflix romantic comedy Voicemails for Isabelle and the 2023 feature Scrambled, starring Yvonne Strahovski. The outlet further reports that Twain will co-produce the biopic alongside Amie Karp, known for producing Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021). The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Twain for comment but has yet to receive a response.

Twain's Illustrious Career

Twain is widely regarded not only as one of the greatest country acts but also as one of the best-selling musical artists of all time. She skyrocketed to superstardom in the mid-1990s with the release of her second studio album, The Woman in Me, in 1995, which featured her first major hit, Any Man of Mine. Over her more than three-decade-long career, Twain has released six studio albums. She is a five-time Grammy winner with 18 nominations, including Best Contemporary Country Album for The Woman in Me and Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her 1997 ballad You're Still the One. Her most recent Grammy nomination came in 2005. Since bursting onto the scene, Twain has sold over 100 million records worldwide and achieved seven number-one singles on the Billboard charts.

Success of the Michael Jackson Biopic

News of Twain's biopic comes amid the success of Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic starring the late star's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, 29. Released in April, the film has earned nearly $400 million domestically and over $500 million worldwide, despite controversy. According to IMDb, the film follows the early life of Michael Jackson, from his discovery as the lead of the Jackson Five to his pursuit of becoming the biggest entertainer in the world. It is part of a string of biopics dominating the 2020s, including the Timothée Chalamet-led Bob Dylan film A Complete Unknown and the Bruce Springsteen tale starring Jeremy Allen White.

Recent Public Appearance

Prior to the biopic announcement, Twain shocked fans with her appearance at the 2026 ACM Awards. At the ceremony in May, the superstar showcased a notably taut face while wearing a sparkling silver gown and leather gloves. Her seemingly ageless look sparked reactions on social media, with one user writing, "She looks like a different person and not in a good way." Another questioned, "Who is that?" Despite some praise, many fans noted that she no longer resembles her former self. Twain hosted the event, held May 17 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, featuring performances by Lainey Wilson, Blake Shelton, Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, and others.
