Savannah Guthrie, the anchor of NBC's Today show, is set to host a new game show based on the wildly popular online word game Wordle. The announcement came on Monday, revealing that Jimmy Fallon will serve as an executive producer for the project, which is being developed in collaboration with The New York Times.
Global Phenomenon
Wordle, originally created by software engineer Josh Wardle, became a global sensation shortly after its launch in 2021. The game's simple yet addictive premise—players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word—captivated millions worldwide. In 2022, The New York Times acquired Wordle, integrating it into its suite of puzzles and games.
Show Details
Guthrie described the upcoming show as “super fast-paced and fun,” emphasizing that it is designed to be a “great family game” suitable for viewers of all ages. Filming is scheduled for this summer, with casting currently open until May 29. While an official air date has yet to be announced, production is expected to move quickly.
The show has been in development for some time, but Guthrie's involvement was reportedly delayed due to the search for her missing mother. Despite this, Guthrie expressed excitement about the project, stating, “We’ve been holding this secret for a while, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”
Jimmy Fallon, known for his late-night talk show and previous game show ventures, brings his comedic and production expertise to the project. The collaboration between Guthrie, Fallon, and The New York Times aims to capture the essence of the digital game while translating it into an engaging television format.
