A former coal miner from North Wales was moved to tears on BBC's The Repair Shop after experts restored a cherished family heirloom. John from Holywell brought a working replica of a Welsh coal mine, crafted by his grandfather over 100 years ago, to the show. The intricate model had stopped working after a botched repair damaged its delicate internal components.
Horologist Steve Fletcher painstakingly rebuilt the missing parts, while art restorer Lucia Scalisi restored the model's painted surface. When John returned to see the finished restoration, he fought back tears, saying: 'Oh my god, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You've done a fantastic job.'
The episode also featured other emotional restorations. Sarah and her daughter Laura from Belfast brought a Victorian writing box originally given by Sarah's grandmother's fiancé. Woodworker Will Kirk and bookbinder Chris Shaw repaired its cracked veneer and torn leather.
Jacquie from Barrow-in-Furness presented Rosebud, a 75-year-old doll that belonged to her late mother. Toy restorer Charlotte Abbott rebuilt the doll's missing limbs and wig. Finally, Tillie Newnham from Rugby brought an original 1930s design for the Humber Bridge, which was treated by paper conservator Angelina Bakalarou.
