Rebel Wilson's latest film, Bride Hard, has been panned by critics as a 'tedious and maddeningly laugh-free endurance test'. The action comedy, which attempts to merge a female-led wedding comedy with an action caper, has been described as 'as bad as it gets' in a scathing review.
The film centres on Sam (Wilson), a maid of honour hiding her job as a superspy from her best friend Betsy (Anna Camp). When criminals take the wedding guests hostage, Sam must reveal her true identity and save the day. However, critics say the film lacks humour and competence, with one noting that even the action sequences are 'uninvolving'.
Director Simon West, known for Con Air, is criticised for losing his confidence behind the camera. The review also highlights that Wilson, who was funnier in a handful of scenes in Bridesmaids than in this entire movie, lacks the star power needed to carry the film. Despite a supporting cast including Anna Chlumsky, Stephen Dorff and Oscar winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph, the film fails to deliver.
The only amusing moment, according to the review, is unintentional: a scene featuring product placements for Fiji water, Lay's chips and elf cosmetics, which explains where some of the budget came from. Bride Hard is described as a 'cheap rip-off' that 'proudly recycles well-known popcorn plots without any attempt at originality'.
