Bestselling author Rebecca Yarros has announced her newest standalone romance novel, Peculiar Stars, a slow-burn castaway story set for release this year. The author, best known for the Fourth Wing and the Empyrean fantasy series, revealed the book during an exclusive appearance on TODAY on April 28, describing it as a castaway romance centred on survival, identity, and unexpected connection.
Plot and Characters
The story follows a woman named Callista, who crashes during a cyclone and finds herself stranded on a deserted island alongside her fiancé’s cousin. As months pass and the hope of rescue fades, the pair are forced into close proximity, where a reluctant but growing emotional connection begins to take shape. According to the official synopsis, the relationship is a slow-burn, with both characters initially resisting their feelings. However, as time stretches on and the outside world feels increasingly distant, something deeper begins to develop between them.
“They resist their connection at first, but as months wear on, and the hope of rescue fades, something real starts taking shape, built on who they are when everything else is stripped away,” the synopsis reads. The description continues: “When they’re finally found, the world hasn’t changed. But they have.”
Yarros’s Writing Journey
The announcement continues Yarros’s established pattern of alternating between fantasy and contemporary romance. Following the release of Onyx Storm in January 2025, the third instalment in her Empyrean series, the author confirmed she would return to romance for her next project. “I swing back and forth between the two,” she said in an interview with Jenna Bush Hager, referring to her balance between fantasy and contemporary storytelling. Her last contemporary release, Variation, published in 2024, followed a dancer reconnecting with a past love, showcasing her continued interest in emotionally driven, character-focused narratives.
Yarros’s rise in popularity has largely been driven by the success of her Empyrean series, which began with Fourth Wing in 2023 and quickly became a global bestseller, particularly across BookTok. The series follows Violet Sorrengail as she trains to become a dragon rider while uncovering political secrets and navigating high-stakes relationships.
Personal Life and Writing Pace
Despite her rapid success, Yarros has spoken openly about the need to slow down her writing pace. The author, who has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, has previously said the intense publishing schedule impacted her ability to balance work and family life. “I miss my kids, and I miss my family,” she said in the Jenna podcast interview, explaining her decision to prioritise healthier working hours moving forward. With Peculiar Stars, Yarros appears to be returning to a more grounded, character-led story, but one that still carries the emotional intensity and slow-burn tension that has defined much of her work.
Release Details
Fans can expect a romance that leans heavily into isolation, forced proximity, and emotional transformation, a combination that has already proven popular among her readership. The novel is set to be published on November 17, 2026, by Montlake, Amazon Publishing’s romance imprint, and is expected to draw significant attention from Yarros’s existing fanbase.
