Rebecca Romijn, who played Mystique in the original X-Men films, has confirmed that the script for next year's Avengers: Doomsday is still incomplete, despite filming having been underway for several months. The actor made the revelation during a panel at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday.
Romijn is among a number of original X-Men stars set to reprise their roles in the blockbuster, which will feature characters from The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts* and Black Panther uniting against Doctor Doom. When asked if she had finished filming, she replied: 'The script hasn't – they haven't finished writing it. It's been very, very fun, and we don't know yet.'
Her comments fuel speculation that the film is being written on the fly, a rumour that began circulating in April. Marvel further hinted at production challenges when it delayed the release from May 2026 to December 2026. In a separate development, filmmaker James Gunn recently criticised the industry trend of making movies without a finished screenplay, noting that he had axed a DC project for that very reason.
Romijn will reunite with co-stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden and Alan Cumming, the latter having seemingly spoiled a scene from Doomsday in an earlier interview. Robert Downey Jr is set to portray Doctor Doom in this film and its 2027 sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.
