Gordon Ramsay has revealed he was reduced to tears during his final service with mentor Marco Pierre White in 1989, describing the encounter as marked by "this level of aggression." The confession features in the new BBC documentary Rise of a Rockstar Chef, which explores the careers of Ramsay, White, and Heston Blumenthal.
Ramsay, who was 22 at the time, clashed with White over the timing of fish they were frying in a pan. He recalled: "I answered back. I mean, he was angry. Chef jacket buttons flying everywhere, and I'm up like that [pinned up], and he's shaking me against the f***ing coffee machine. The glass bowl of coffee splattered everywhere."
A Night That Shaped a Career
The incident took place on the evening of October 13, 1989, during Ramsay's final service at the restaurant. White, who insists the push was "necessary," said: "The truth is, we push the people we see qualities within. You have to push them like they've never been pushed before."
Ramsay added: "I bawled my eyes out. I was f***ing upset. I was sort of shocked, you know, that I was leaving and this level of aggression. He knew I could run that restaurant without him, and it was like a relationship that was coming to an end, and he wanted to finish me before I got to somebody else."
Three Chefs, Three Michelin Stars Each
All three men went on to earn three Michelin stars each. White opened Harveys in 1987, becoming the first to put British food on the map. Ramsay went to France to learn his skills before building a television career, while Blumenthal adopted a scientific approach at the Fat Duck.
Blumenthal, who also worked with White, suffered a severe mental health crisis in late 2023. Ramsay has faced bankruptcy struggles while expanding his global restaurant empire, and White, now 64, described his intense work ethic as "a painkiller" during difficult times.
A Reunion After Three Decades
Despite the tears, Ramsay believes White's treatment may have been beneficial. He said: "Rivalry is healthy, to be at the beginning of that incredible journey where no British chef had been crowned 3 Stars, to be behind Marco and be there while he was winning two. The year he got his third Star, I won my first Star, it created this amazing amount of drive."
The documentary also features a reunion in episode three, where the trio sit down together for the first time in nearly 20 years. Ramsay described the lunch as "one of those moments that I'll cherish for the rest of my life," though he added: "Would I do it again tomorrow? F***ing no chance."
Rise of a Rockstar Chef starts on BBC1 and BBC iPlayer on November 5.
