Sky's new thriller Prisoner launches today (April 30) at 9pm on Sky and NOW, with all six episodes available to stream immediately. The series follows prison transport officer Amber Todd (Izuka Hoyle) on her first shift back after maternity leave, which goes awry when the convoy is attacked. She ends up handcuffed and on the run with assassin and mafia informant Tibor Stone (Tahar Rahim), who must testify at the Old Bailey in four days.
The cast also includes Eddie Marsan, Sam Troughton, Laurie Davidson, and Finn Bennett. The show was filmed across various locations in England and Wales, with 95 per cent shot on location—a higher proportion than typical productions.
A key action sequence, the prison convoy ambush, was filmed in Cardiff's Bute Tunnel. Production designer Arwel Jones described the shoot as a 'military operation' with logistical challenges, including only three nights to film. The tunnel was chosen to 'ramp up' tension, replacing an earlier plan involving a hedge and field.
Other locations include the Severn Bridge, used to emphasise the story's setting between England and Wales, and a Georgian mansion in the Vale of Glamorgan, which reflects the character Harrison's self-image as a 'Lord of the Manor'. A disused spandex factory in Cardiff served as a factory set, with minimal dressing to create an atmospheric backdrop.
Additional filming took place in Abergavenny, the Principality Stadium, Park Street, Stadium Plaza, and Adamsdown in Cardiff. French actor Rahim, known for The Serpent, praised the Welsh landscapes, noting the contrast with his home city of Paris.
