Prince William has revealed his dream career once was to be a policeman, and later a DJ, during a surprise television appearance to mark the Earthshot Prize.
On Thursday, the Prince of Wales made an unexpected appearance on the Graham Norton Show as part of a special edition celebrating the environmental award. The episode, which airs on Friday, featured William alongside Cate Blanchett, Robert Irwin and Hannah Waddingham, all of whom are involved with the prize.
The prince's arrival was a surprise for the audience, as Norton first spoke with the three guests before suddenly bringing William into the conversation.
Climate Change and Light-Hearted Topics
Before discussing non-Earthshot matters, William emphasised the urgent need to tackle climate change and spoke about why this is so important. After addressing these topics, the conversation turned to more light-hearted subjects.
One of these was whether the future King ever wanted to pursue a non-royal career. William, to the audience's surprise, confirmed that he did.
Dream Roles Revealed
His dream role was once to be a policeman, and he also said he wanted to be a DJ. He said: "I did want to be a policeman when I was younger; I thought I could make a good one.
"And then I went through a phase of wanting to be a DJ – I wasn't very good."
This is not the first time it has come to light that William expressed an interest in being a policeman. It is believed that when he was younger, he told Princess Diana, his late mother, that he wanted to work in the police force to protect her.
Family Interest in Policing
Diana's biographer Andrew Morton once confirmed this. He said: "William and Harry were aware of their destiny. On one occasion, the boys were discussing their futures with Diana.
"'When I grow up I want to be a policeman and look after you Mummy,' said William. Quick as a flash Harry replied, with a note of triumph in his voice, 'Oh no you can't, you've got to be king'."
William also appears not to be the only royal to have expressed an interest in becoming a policeman one day. His eldest son, Prince George, was also extremely interested in the police force when he was much younger. Prince William once revealed to a police commissioner at a Palace reception: "[George] is obsessed, actually, by the police… cars, toys, everything."
