Fans of the 1970s-set spy thriller Ponies are eagerly awaiting news about a potential second season. The series, which aired earlier this year on Peacock, Sky, and NOW, has captivated audiences with its Cold War intrigue and strong performances.
Emilia Clarke Addresses Season 2 Prospects
Emilia Clarke, who stars as Beatrice 'Bea' Grant, has spoken positively about the show's future. In an interview with Variety, she revealed that there have been 'many discussions' regarding a renewal. Clarke, who also serves as a producer on the series, stated, 'I'm very fortunate to be an actual producer, so I get to be a part of these conversations.'
Season one of Ponies concluded with a major cliffhanger, leaving viewers desperate for answers. The show's creators are hopeful that a greenlight for season two will come soon.
Critical Acclaim and Ratings
The eight-part series has been a hit with critics and audiences alike. It currently holds a 97 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 83 percent score on the Popcornmeter. The show follows two secretaries working at the US embassy in Moscow in 1977, who become CIA operatives after their husbands die under suspicious circumstances.
Clarke plays the over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants, Bea Grant, while Hayley Lu Richardson portrays Twila Hasbeck, a small-town girl. The duo teams up to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy and solve the mystery behind their husbands' deaths.
Cast and Creators
Alongside Clarke and Richardson, the cast includes Adrian Lester, Artjom Gilz, Vic Michaelis, Nicholas Podany, and Petro Ninovskyi. The series is created by David Iserson and Susanna Fogel.
Clarke admitted that before taking on the role, she was not well-versed in the history of the era. However, while filming in Budapest, she embarked on a walking tour that deepened her understanding of Cold War history. She told Cosmopolitan, 'The basis of "trust no one, World War III will happen tomorrow" energy is the biggest takeaway.' She added that understanding the geopolitical landscape was 'deeply fascinating and harrowing.'
Richardson also shared her experience, saying, 'It was really interesting to immerse ourselves with these characters into that time and world.'
Season one of Ponies is currently streaming on NOW and Sky.
