Paul Whitehouse has paid tribute to “amazing” Gone Fishing dog Ted, just days after he was targeted in a broad daylight attempted mugging in north London. The comedian, alongside best friend and co-host Bob Mortimer, reflected on their late pet ahead of the series’ upcoming ninth series, which will be the last to feature the lovable canine.
Ted's final series
Ted first appeared in the popular BBC show during its third series in 2020 and quickly became a hit with fans, appearing in more than 40 episodes. Gone Fishing dog Ted died earlier this year.
Appearing on The One Show on Thursday, October 22, Mortimer said it was “so sad” that the upcoming episode will be Ted’s last. “He always stole the show, didn't he?” Whitehouse agreed, and added: “We have to give it to him, don't we? It was, is it method acting? Because they say don't work with dogs and animals and that, but he was amazing, wasn't he?'”
'Our farewell to Ted'
He then laughed as he said that Ted was “so disinterested”, adding that the dog “didn’t care about us” as they delivered their impressions of Ted. Mortimer said the upcoming episode, as well as the Christmas special, will give a “proper send-off” to Ted.
“It's our farewell to Ted,” said Whitehouse. “He's extraordinary in it. But yeah, we'll really miss him.”
Whitehouse mugging
It comes just days after Whitehouse was targeted by a mugger in broad daylight in the streets of north London. Whilst buying medicine for his wife, the 68-year-old was reportedly attacked at a cash point in Islington. CCTV footage appears to show Whitehouse wrestling his bank card from the hand’s of the unsuccessful thief, who then proceeded to flee the scene.
Speaking about the frightening incident on Instagram, his wife, Dr Mine Conkbayir said: “Well, a horrid start to the weekend, would be an understatement. Yesterday, I had a bad reaction to some treatment, which has left me feeling rather rotten. So, last night, Paul dashed out to get me some meds. He was mugged on Essex Road (Islington) - at the cashpoint beside the Sainsbury's Local. He did fight back and retrieved his card, with the perp scuttling away empty-handed. But that's not the point, is it,” she said, explaining she decided to share the footage to raise awareness and remind people to be “super vigilant”.
Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing returns for series nine on Sunday, October 25 at 9pm.
