BBC Comedian Paul Merton Makes Unexpected Race Across The World Admission
In a surprising television revelation, beloved BBC comedian Paul Merton has confessed to an unexpected connection with the hit competition series Race Across The World. The admission came during a lively appearance on The One Show, where Merton joined fellow guests Tyler West and Alice Haig alongside presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp.
Unknowing Involvement in Filming
Merton revealed that back in 2019, before the first series of Race Across The World had even aired, he encountered two contestants during filming in Ashford. "This is before the programme went out," Merton recalled, "two people came running up to me very excitedly and said, 'We've got to get to Paris'."
The comedian admitted he was completely baffled by the encounter, having noticed the camera crew but receiving only the confusing explanation that they were "Racing Across The World." "I had no idea!" Merton exclaimed, "The programme hadn't gone out at that point."
Missed Opportunity for Greater Involvement
Reflecting on what might have been, Merton revealed he could have played a much larger role in the show. "If I'd known, my cab driver was there, we could have taken them to Dover, and I could've been in the whole show!" he said with characteristic humor. "I could've ended up in Cairo."
When presenter Alex Jones joked that he could have participated in the celebrity version, Merton responded with a telling "Exactly," hinting at what might have been a different television journey altogether.
Current Series and Celebrity Reflections
The conversation occurred as Strictly Come Dancing star Tyler West discussed his new role hosting the Race Across The World podcast, having previously participated in the celebrity edition with partner Molly Rainsford. Roman Kemp, who also took part in the celebrity version with his sister Harleymoon, revealed that the experience took "a lot longer than people think."
The current sixth season of Race Across The World features five teams racing over 12,000 kilometers across eight countries, from Sicily's Palermo to Mongolia's remote Hatgal village. Contestants face extreme challenges with no smartphones, internet access, or bank cards, surviving on just £26 per person daily while competing for a £20,000 prize.
Behind-the-Scenes Insights and Contestant Dynamics
Tyler West offered insights into the current season's contestants, highlighting several compelling pairings:
- Jo and Kush: "These Scouse lads have captured the nation's hearts with their relatable banter."
- Mark and Margo: An in-law pairing with an incredible coming-together story
- Puja and Roshni: Described as exceptionally switched-on competitors
"All the pairs and all the dynamics coming together," West explained, "it's what makes the show what it is. You can relate to so many characters as you learn their stories and as the journey unfolds."
Financial Tensions and Memorable Moments
The discussion also touched on the financial pressures of the competition, with West joking that Roman Kemp was "the tightest man he'd ever met" during their celebrity edition experience. Kemp admitted to constant budget worries, contrasting with West and Rainsford's more liberal spending approach that included nightclub visits.
"We ate the most amount of food on Race Across The World history!" West proudly declared, highlighting the varied approaches contestants take to managing their limited resources during the grueling competition.
The One Show continues to air weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer, while Race Across The World maintains its Thursday evening slot at 8pm on the same platforms, continuing to captivate audiences with its unique blend of travel adventure and human drama.
