Before Ryan Hawley became the face of Robert Sugden in Emmerdale, actor Karl Davis played the role from 2001 to 2005, with a brief return in 2009. Now, nearly two decades after leaving the Dales, Davis has built an impressive career with roles in major TV series.
Davis, who took over the role from child actor Richard Smith, was involved in controversial storylines including a feud with brother Andy and an affair with Katie. The backlash was so intense that he was once hit by a handbag in the street, though he noted most reactions were friendly banter.
After turning down a return in 2014, Davis moved on to roles in Game of Thrones, Call the Midwife, Happy Valley, and The Bay. In 2023, he was cast as Tony Walters in the BBC school drama Waterloo Road, alongside Kym Marsh.
Reflecting on his time on the soap, Davis told SoapLife: 'Emmerdale was like my drama school. I feel very fortunate that things have gone so well.' He admitted he hasn't watched the show since leaving, but remains grateful for the experience.
