Nick Berry on leaving Heartbeat and why he won't return

Nick Berry, the beloved star of the hit 90s ITV drama Heartbeat, has finally revealed why he walked away from the show at the height of its popularity – and why fans shouldn't hold their breath for a return.

The actor, who played PC Nick Rowan for six years, admitted that leaving the role was a tough decision but one he doesn't regret. "I just felt it was time to go," Berry explained. "I didn't want to overstay my welcome."

Berry's departure in 1998 shocked fans, as the show continued for another 12 years without him. However, the actor insists he has no plans to revisit the role, despite the show's enduring popularity.

Why Nick Berry Won't Return to Heartbeat

When asked if he'd consider a Heartbeat revival, Berry was firm: "That ship has sailed." The actor, now 60, has moved on to other ventures, including music and writing.

"I'm very proud of my time on the show," he added, "but I've done my bit. It's important to know when to walk away."

Berry also hinted that the gruelling filming schedule played a part in his decision. Heartbeat was filmed in North Yorkshire, often requiring long hours on set.

Life After Heartbeat

Since leaving the show, Berry has focused on his family and creative projects. He released a chart-topping single in the 80s and has since turned his attention to writing novels.

"I've been lucky to have different creative outlets," he said. "Acting was a big part of my life, but it's not everything."

Despite stepping back from acting, Berry remains grateful for his time on Heartbeat and the loyal fanbase it gave him. "I'll always be associated with Nick Rowan, and that's fine by me," he laughed.
