Netflix's new series The Boroughs has been described as a 'masterpiece' and the perfect watch for fans of Stranger Things who are seeking their next sci-fi fix. The Duffer Brothers' hit show concluded on New Year's Eve 2025, leaving viewers desperate for comparable content.
Television critic Luke Eccleston has championed the series in a TikTok video, stating: 'I have found the perfect show for you. Eight episodes have just dropped on Netflix and I have binge-watched the entire thing. If you love Stranger Things or Steven Spielberg films, this is exactly what you need.' He noted that while The Boroughs offers a similar sci-fi adventure and mystery vibe, it centres on older adults rather than youngsters.
The plot follows Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina), who moves to a retirement community called The Burroughs after his wife's death. He soon discovers an alien atop his neighbour, leading to a mystery-filled narrative. Luke added: 'What becomes of this is crazy. It's full of sci-fi and mystery and you are constantly questioning what is going on in this town.'
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the series boasts an ensemble cast including Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, Jena Malone, and Alfre Woodard. On IMDb, it holds a score of 7.5 out of 10 from over 6,500 reviews, and a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic praised it as 'one of the best series that Netflix has put out this year.'
Viewers have responded positively, with one TikTok user commenting: 'Just watched this today, it's really good.' Another said: 'I watched it all in one weekend, it's incredible.' A third noted: 'It's quite odd but addictive at the same time.'
