A critically underrated comedy-drama, which garnered a devoted cult following in the United States after being rescued by Netflix, has finally become available for UK audiences to stream.
From One Tree Hill to Everyone Is Doing Great
Fans of the iconic teen drama One Tree Hill will be delighted to discover that two of its former stars, James Lafferty and Stephen Colletti, have teamed up to create Everyone Is Doing Great. The series originally premiered on Hulu in 2021 and follows the lives of Seth (Colletti) and Jeremy (Lafferty), two fading Hollywood actors struggling to revive their careers five years after the conclusion of their hit vampire series, Eternal.
While Seth desperately seeks new acting opportunities, Jeremy faces a personal crisis as his marriage to former co-star Andrea (Alexandra Park) unravels due to his apparent lack of ambition. The show has been praised for its raw and humorous portrayal of life after fame.
Crowdfunding and Netflix Rescue
Despite its popularity—boasting a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes—the first season was crowdfunded by Lafferty and Colletti through an Indiegogo campaign, raising $250,000 (£183,700). This meant the series was not a Hulu original, forcing the creators to start from scratch for a second season.
Fortunately, Netflix stepped in with a distribution deal, releasing season two in 2024. A third season is now in early development, and as of Monday, 11th May, both seasons have been made available on Netflix UK.
Behind the Scenes
Speaking to Deadline in 2018, Lafferty explained the inspiration: “We started joking around about an alternate reality where we had just rested on our laurels [after One Tree Hill] and kept all our eggs in the acting basket. That’s where we came up with these characters who are languishing for their own reasons and whose daily lives are a mixture of sadness and absurdity.”
The series has received glowing reviews, with one IMDb user calling it “great”, “real”, and “100% binge-worthy”. Another fan added: “Glad these guys could make this show! So much talent, rawness & harsh reality that seems to come along with being famous!”
With 16 episodes now available, viewers are encouraged to binge the series to help secure its third season. Everyone Is Doing Great is streaming on Netflix.
