Netflix is giving fans a one in 12 chance to win $2,000,000 in a new competition series based on the classic board game Monopoly. The streamer announced the show, which will feature 12 players living out the real estate game in a life-size Monopoly Town Square, making deals, earning cash, and buying houses.
How the Game Works
According to Tudum by Netflix: 'One by one, bankrupt players will be eliminated while others build their empire — until the one person left standing takes it all.' Contestants will swap the standard 50 x 50cm board for an immersive, full-scale environment where they must outlast their rivals to claim the grand prize.
Production and Partnerships
The series is produced in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment, which owns the rights to Monopoly, and Studio Lambert, the production company behind other Netflix competition shows such as 'Squid Game: The Challenge' and 'The Circle'. The deal comes after Netflix secured a pact with Hasbro for the board game rights.

Fans quickly took to social media to react. Karlito joked on X: 'Finally a chance to use my “Go directly to jail” card for real life rent payments.' Other Adaptations and Context
The Monopoly series joins a roster of unscripted adaptations of board games and films on Netflix, including 'Wonka’s The Golden Ticket', set to release on September 23. Hasbro Entertainment is also producing a Monopoly film with Lionsgate and Margot Robbie’s production company Lucky Chap, aiming to build on the success of 'Barbie' with Mattel.
History of Monopoly
The game now known as Monopoly was originally created by left-wing feminist Lizzie Magie, who patented the board game in 1903. For many years, Charles Darrow, who was introduced to the game later, was credited as the original inventor. Monopoly debuted in 1935 and has sold over 275 million copies worldwide.
Release Date
Netflix’s Monopoly series will premiere in autumn 2027.
