Netflix subscribers have only days left to watch the 2013 horror film Mama, which one viewer described as exploring the 'twisted depth of maternal love' and another declared 'everyone should watch this movie at least once.' The film will leave the streaming platform on July 25.
Plot and Premise
The story follows two young sisters, Victoria and Lily, who are found abandoned in a dilapidated house in the woods years after their parents' death. Experts are baffled as to how they survived with no apparent food or resources. The girls are taken to a safe facility and monitored by childhood behaviorists who believe they have been alone for five years.
To reintroduce them to society, the girls are taken in by their uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his partner Annabel (Jessica Chastain), who intend to provide a safe and loving home. However, they soon discover there is more to the case than meets the eye.
Cast and Crew
Alongside Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain and Game of Thrones alum Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the cast includes revered horror actor Javier Botet. Mama was directed by Andy Muschietti, known for the IT horror franchise, with Guillermo del Toro serving as executive producer.
Critical Reception
At the time of writing, the film holds a 63% critic score and a 55% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. One viewer commented: 'Mama expands a chilling short film into a full-length feature exploring the dark, twisted depth of maternal love.' Another said: 'This is actually a pretty good movie. I don't understand the hate from some critics. I haven't seen this movie in many years, but it has aged very well. It also has a lot of great scenes and creepy moments.' A fourth watcher added: 'I don't know what it is about it, but this film somehow stuck with me. In my opinion, it does not get the credit it is due. Very atmospheric movie.'
Mama is currently streaming on Netflix and will be removed on July 25.
