Netflix is reportedly developing a major documentary featuring One Direction stars Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson, marking a reunion of sorts a decade after the band's split. The multi-million-pound project, already in production, will follow the pair on a road trip across the United States as they reflect on their lives, their time in the boyband, and the tragic death of former bandmate Liam Payne last October.
According to sources, the documentary is slated for release in 2026, ten years after One Direction announced their hiatus. The series is expected to explore Payne's death in Buenos Aires, where he fell from a balcony, and how the tragedy brought the former bandmates closer together. Harry Styles and Niall Horan are not believed to be involved at this stage.
The documentary will be directed by Nicola Marsh, known for Song Exploder and Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story, and produced in partnership with Campfire Studios, the team behind Unknown Number: The High School Catfish and America's Sweethearts: The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. A Netflix spokesperson confirmed the project to Metro.
One Direction, formed on The X Factor in 2010, became one of the best-selling boybands of all time, with over 70 million records sold worldwide. They won nearly 200 awards, including seven BRIT Awards, before going on hiatus in 2015. Zayn left the group earlier that year but has since reconnected with his former bandmates, including a public reunion with Louis in New York last month.
