One beloved crime drama has been ranked above Helen Mirren's detective series Prime Suspect, BBC drama Happy Valley, and ITV series Vera. According to TV fans on Reddit, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Law & Order: SVU) is even better than these classic British police procedurals, and it is streaming on Netflix now.
In a thread about favourite procedural or cop shows, Redditors were invited to share their top picks when it comes to the crème de la crème of crime dramas. Among other shows named in the thread was the beloved ITV series Broadchurch. However, one user on the platform mentioned Law & Order: SVU, which received 241 upvotes, making it even more popular than the British TV crime staples.
Audiences have also showered the show with praise on IMDb. One person posted: “Captivating Crime Drama with Unmatched Chemistry. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit consistently delivers gripping and thought-provoking episodes that keep viewers on the edge of their seats.” A second wrote: “Quality writing and outstanding performances set 'Law And Order: SVU' apart from the other dramas on television.” A third person posted on the platform: “Season 25 is a Thrilling Triumph!! SVU Season 25 is an absolute masterpiece!”
A fourth person titled their 10/10 review: “an excellent show, absolutely stunning” and went on to say: “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is one of the best and most underrated shows on TV.” Yet another person declared: “Quality is the foundation that 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' is based upon. With compelling storylines, great performances and a first-rate cast; 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' radiates from the screen each hour it is on every night.”
Law & Order SVU was the first spin-off from Dick Wolf's highly popular series Law & Order. The show followed detectives Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) as they investigate and get justice for the victims of sex-based crimes. While Stabler departed, Benson was promoted to Captain and the series continued to follow her character progression as she brought criminals to justice. Some of the episodes were even inspired by real-life cases in the media. Although the cast has changed over the years, Hargitay has remained a constant on the series. She went on to win an Emmy in 2006 for her performance in the drama.
Law & Order: SVU has been on screens since 1999 and continues to go strong, with season 27 wrapping up last month. The programme has garnered 108 award nominations to date and bagged 59 accolades. Law and Order: SVU is streaming on Netflix now.
