Millie Gibson Cast as Ncuti Gatwa's Companion in Doctor Who

Millie Gibson has been confirmed as Ruby Sunday, the companion to Ncuti Gatwa's 15th Doctor in the upcoming series of Doctor Who. The announcement was made live during Friday's Children In Need appeal on BBC One.

The 18-year-old actress, best known for her role as Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street, expressed her disbelief at being cast in the long-running sci-fi drama. 'It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true,' she said. Gibson won best young actor at this year's British Soap Awards for her performance.

Her first episode alongside Gatwa is set to air during the 2023 festive period. Gatwa praised his new co-star, stating: 'Millie just is the companion. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor.'

Showrunner Russell T Davies, who returns to oversee the new episodes, added: 'It's the great honour of my job to find the next generation of talent, and Millie shines like a star already.' The new series will be broadcast on BBC in the UK and streamed on Disney+ internationally.

Gatwa's debut as the Doctor follows the three special episodes featuring David Tennant's 14th Doctor, which will air in November 2023 as part of the show's 60th anniversary celebrations.
