Andy and Kim Murray's £7.6 million hotel, Cromlix House Hotel, will be the subject of a new Channel 4 documentary series, titled Our Scottish Hotel, offering viewers a year-long glimpse into its transformation. The three-part series is scheduled to air in December, although a specific release date has yet to be confirmed.
A Five-Star Estate with a Rich History
The Cromlix is a five-star luxury boutique hotel set within 34 acres of private woodland and manicured grounds. Housed in a grand 19th-century Victorian country mansion, the estate features original stone turrets, a private chapel, and its own loch, blending historic design with premium facilities.
The property was purchased by Andy Murray in 2013 for £1.8 million, and millions more have since been invested in its overhaul. Company accounts published in 2015 revealed that £2.46 million was spent in the preceding year, on top of the £3.44 million outlaid on the venue in 2013, bringing the total expenditure to £6 million. According to public records, the Murrays have spent at least £7.6 million in total on Cromlix House.
No Homage to Tennis
Despite fans' anticipation, the hotel does not feature Andy Murray's extensive tennis trophy collection. Kim Murray has confirmed that the business is not a "homage to Andy or tennis," and there is only one piece of evidence of her husband's sporting career within the hotel.
In an interview with Meander Scotland, Kim said: "We do have a tennis court at the hotel which is painted in the Wimbledon colours, and it features an umpire chair from a match Andy played against Roger Federer in Glasgow. We also have a pickleball court at the hotel. We actually didn't want the hotel to be a homage to Andy and tennis though, we want it to be a great hotel that just happens to be owned by Andy - so there aren't too many references to him inside!"
Art and Design at the Fore
One aspect Andy is permitted to showcase at the hotel is his art collection. Speaking to Homes and Interiors Scotland, Kim revealed: "Andy is constantly buying large-scale artwork and we are running out of space at home. So we end up bringing a lot of it to Cromlix on a sort of rotational basis so that our guests can enjoy our personal collection as much as we do. Freeing up space at home is, of course, an added bonus for me."
The interiors, overseen by Kim, feature striking botanical wall coverings, custom-made soft furnishings, diverse modern art, and sumptuous colour schemes drawn from the surrounding gardens and countryside. Period touches such as freestanding roll-top baths, open fireplaces, and vintage furniture blend with bright dining areas and spacious lounges.
Speaking to Scottish Woman Magazine, Kim said: "Well, I don't love all of Andy's art choices! But in general, I appreciate the fact that he buys art that talks to him in some way, whether that's because it's thought-provoking or interesting, or just fun. We've got a really eclectic mix at Cromlix of traditional landscapes to much more modern pieces like the David Shrigleys. We have loaned quite a bit from the Royal Scottish Academy, and we'll keep adding to it as the hotel evolves."
A Family Legacy and New Ventures
The hotel has held special significance for the Murrays for many years, with the pair hosting their wedding reception there in April 2015. Andy's brother Jamie also tied the knot at the same location in 2010, while the Murray siblings' grandparents, Shirley and Roy Erskine, marked their golden and silver wedding anniversaries there too.
Speaking about the hotel's emotional significance in 2024, Kim told POB Hotels: "Cromlix had been part of Andy's family history for a number of years - his grandparents had their silver wedding anniversary here, and there'd been lots of other family events over the years. When the hotel was facing closure, Andy felt like he'd like to try to keep it open, partly because of his family ties, but also because it's a great source of jobs to people in the local area. We now have over 70 employees working at the hotel. I'm not sure Andy or I either set out to be part of the hospitality industry but it's something we really enjoy now we're part of it."
The documentary series came to fruition after one of the hotel's eateries, Cradle at Cromlix, earned a spot in the Michelin Guide. The venue also houses another restaurant, The Garden Room, a dedicated afternoon-tea space, The Glasshouse, and a bar. The Murrays have described the renovation project as "the biggest financial gamble" of their relationship, and the new series will air in December.
