Rich House Poor House mum in tears over daughter's surgery after cancer fears

A mother has broken down in tears on Channel 5's Rich House Poor House as she discussed her daughter's major surgery following cancer fears. Lyndsay, from Worthing, appeared on the show with her 21-year-old daughter Katie, who had undergone a life-changing operation two months prior.

Katie was diagnosed with a rare pancreatic condition seven years ago, which doctors warned could lead to pancreatic cancer by the time she turned 25. To prevent this, she had her pancreas, gallbladder, spleen and a quarter of her stomach removed. Speaking on the programme, Katie described the 30-centimetre scar she now has and the limitations she faces while recovering.

Lyndsay became emotional as she recalled the 14-hour wait during Katie's surgery, saying: 'Standing in a hospital for 14 hours while your child is having three organs removed, it's got to be the hardest thing as a parent. Knowing that at any minute someone could come out and tell me that she's died.'

The family swapped homes with millionaire Rachel and her husband Steve. Rachel, who has battled cancer four times herself, was moved to tears upon learning about Katie's ordeal. She shared her own medical history, including breast cancer, a parathyroid tumour, lung cancer, a double mastectomy and skin cancer.

When the families met, Rachel and Steve funded five pilot lessons for Katie, who aspires to become a pilot, and donated £10,000 to a childcare agency. The emotional episode highlighted the challenges both families have faced.
