Classic Children's Series Mr Benn Set for Live-Action Film Adaptation

The cherished animated children's television series Mr Benn, which originally aired in 1971, is officially being adapted into a live-action film. This announcement has sparked excitement among fans who grew up with the whimsical adventures of the bowler-hatted protagonist.

Kirk Jones to Write and Direct the Magical Adventure

BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Kirk Jones has been confirmed as the writer and director for this highly anticipated project. Jones, known for his work on I Swear, the biopic about Tourette Syndrome activist John Davidson, expressed his enthusiasm for bringing Mr Benn to a new generation.

"I adored Mr Benn as a child and immediately saw the importance of introducing him to a new generation, in a live action adventure," Jones stated. He elaborated on the series' unique premise, noting that "Mr Benn finds a unique way to travel through time and space, visiting historical and futuristic worlds to solve apparently monumental problems, with kindness, compassion and common sense."

Honoring the Legacy of Creator David McKee

The original animated series was created by the late David McKee, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 87. Despite only airing 13 episodes on the BBC in the 1970s, the show gained enduring popularity through regular repeats, becoming a staple of British children's television.

The McKee family shared their heartfelt support for the film, saying, "The Mr Benn film project has been close to our hearts for many years. It was something our father would often talk about, he was keen to see it happen. We're absolutely thrilled to now have Kirk Jones on board to help guide it in the right direction and we are really excited about going back to Festive Road, where we grew up."

Production Timeline and Casting Details

Casting for the lead role of Mr Benn and supporting characters is scheduled to commence later this year, with full-scale production aiming to begin in 2027. The film's development has been a gradual process, with the McKee family noting that "it has picked up momentum over time and the pieces have gradually come together."

Creative Team and Production Companies Involved

Kirk Jones will also serve as a producer for the film under One Story High. He is joined by a notable production team, including comedian and actor Jack Whitehall for Jackpot Productions, David Barron (known for his work on the Harry Potter films) for BeaglePug Ltd, and Branwen Prestwood Smith and Mike Prestwood Smith for 48 Films. This collaboration promises a blend of creative expertise to faithfully adapt the magical world of Mr Benn.

Themes and Vision for the Film

Jones highlighted the film's potential to resonate in today's world, stating, "Following on from I Swear, I am keen to work on a project that is humorous and entertaining, whilst at the same time, in a world full of distractions, help focus on what is important. If all goes to plan, Mr Benn might even save the world." This vision aligns with the series' core messages of empathy and problem-solving through unconventional means.

The adaptation aims to capture the essence of the original series, where an ordinary man dons costumes from a magical fancy dress shop to embark on extraordinary adventures across time and space. Fans can look forward to seeing how this beloved character translates to the live-action format, bringing his timeless charm to contemporary audiences.
