Mr Benn Live-Action Film Adaptation Announced

Classic British Children's Series Mr Benn Set for Live-Action Film Adaptation

The cherished British children's animated series Mr Benn is poised for a major cinematic revival, with plans unveiled for a live-action film adaptation. Bafta-nominated filmmaker Kirk Jones has been confirmed to write and direct the project, bringing the iconic character to the big screen for the first time.

Reviving a 1970s Television Favourite

Based on the original 1971 creation by the late David McKee, the series follows the adventures of Mr Benn, an ordinary man who dons a distinctive bowler hat. His extraordinary journeys begin whenever he visits a magical fancy dress shop, stepping through its doors into fantastical worlds. Despite airing only 13 episodes on the BBC during the 1970s, the show became a staple of British children's television through frequent repeats, endearing itself to generations of viewers.

Director's Vision and Enthusiasm

Kirk Jones, renowned for his work on the biopic I Swear, expressed profound excitement about helming the adaptation. "I adored Mr Benn as a child and immediately saw the importance of introducing him to a new generation, in a live action adventure," he stated. Jones elaborated on the character's appeal, noting that Mr Benn "finds a unique way to travel through time and space, visiting historical and futuristic worlds to solve apparently monumental problems, with kindness, compassion and common sense."

He further emphasised his ambition for the film to be "humorous and entertaining, whilst at the same time, in a world full of distractions, help focus on what is important." Jones added optimistically, "If all goes to plan, Mr Benn might even save the world."

Family Approval and Production Details

The project holds special significance for the family of creator David McKee, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 87. The McKee family shared their heartfelt support, stating, "The Mr Benn film project has been close to our hearts for many years. It was something our father would often talk about, he was keen to see it happen. It has picked up momentum over time and the pieces have gradually come together."

They continued, "We're absolutely thrilled to now have Kirk Jones on board to help guide it in the right direction and we are really excited about going back to Festive Road, where we grew up."

Casting for lead and supporting roles is expected to begin later this year, with principal photography scheduled for 2027. Jones will also serve as a producer for One Story High. He will be joined by a notable production team, including comedian and actor Jack Whitehall for Jackpot Productions, David Barron of Harry Potter fame for BeaglePug Ltd, and Branwen Prestwood Smith and Mike Prestwood Smith for 48 Films.

A New Chapter for a Timeless Character

This adaptation marks a significant step in preserving and expanding the legacy of Mr Benn, aiming to captivate both nostalgic fans and new audiences alike. With its blend of whimsical adventure and heartfelt themes, the film promises to honour the spirit of the original series while exploring fresh cinematic possibilities.
