Classic Animated Series Mr Benn Set for Live-Action Film Adaptation

The cherished BBC children's animated series Mr Benn is poised for a transformation into a live-action feature film, bringing the iconic bowler-hatted character to a new generation of audiences. This adaptation draws directly from the original 1971 television series created by the late David McKee, which captivated viewers with its whimsical tales of adventure and imagination.

Creative Vision Behind the Project

BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Kirk Jones has been confirmed to write and direct the film. Jones, who recently garnered acclaim for I Swear, a biographical film about Tourette Syndrome campaigner John Davidson, expressed his deep personal connection to the source material.

"I adored Mr Benn as a child and immediately saw the importance of introducing him to a new generation, in a live action adventure," Jones stated. "Mr Benn finds a unique way to travel through time and space, visiting historical and futuristic worlds to solve apparently monumental problems, with kindness, compassion and common sense."

He further elaborated on his motivations, noting, "Following on from I Swear, I am keen to work on a project that is humorous and entertaining, whilst at the same time, in a world full of distractions, help focus on what is important. If all goes to plan, Mr Benn might even save the world."

Enduring Legacy and Production Details

The original Mr Benn programme debuted on the BBC in the 1970s, consisting of just 13 episodes. Despite its limited run, the show's enduring appeal led to frequent repeats, solidifying its status as a staple of British children's programming and a cultural touchstone for generations.

Production is moving forward with auditions for principal and supporting characters expected to commence later this year. Filming is scheduled to begin in 2027, marking a significant milestone in bringing this classic story to the big screen.

Family Support and Production Team

David McKee, the visionary creator of Mr Benn, passed away in 2022 at the age of 87. His family has expressed strong support for the film project, highlighting its long-standing significance.

"The Mr Benn film project has been close to our hearts for many years," the McKee family shared. "It was something our father would often talk about, he was keen to see it happen. It has picked up momentum over time and the pieces have gradually come together. We're absolutely thrilled to now have Kirk Jones on board to help guide it in the right direction and we are really excited about going back to Festive Road, where we grew up."

The production boasts a notable team, with Kirk Jones also serving as a producer for One Story High. He is joined by comedian and actor Jack Whitehall for Jackpot Productions, David Barron (known for his work on the Harry Potter films) for BeaglePug Ltd, and Branwen Prestwood Smith and Mike Prestwood Smith for 48 Films, ensuring a blend of creative and industry expertise.

This live-action adaptation aims to honour the original series' charm while introducing Mr Benn's adventures of kindness and problem-solving to contemporary audiences, promising a film that blends humour, entertainment, and meaningful storytelling.
