Kylie Minogue is set to reveal intimate details about her fiery but brief romance with the late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence in a new tell-all docuseries on Netflix. The 57-year-old pop icon, known for hits like 'Spinning Around,' will open up about the highs and lows of her career and personal life, with a particular focus on her relationship with Hutchence.
A Bold First Encounter
The trailer, released yesterday, features archival images of the couple kissing and posing together. Kylie was just 21 when she met the 29-year-old Michael at an INXS afterparty in 1989. According to Kylie, his first words to her were nothing short of outrageous: 'I don't know what we should do first, have lunch or have sex.' The singer admitted she was both intrigued and scared by his bold claim and their instant chemistry.
In a 2014 interview with Current Affair, Kylie recalled: 'He did ask to kiss me numerous times and I did say no numerous times.'
A Formative Relationship
Kylie and Michael began dating shortly after she ended her relationship with Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan, whom she was with from 1986 to 1989. Their romance lasted three years, ending in 1991. Kylie has often described this period as formative for her young adult years.
'To have someone like that open your eyes to many, many things in a rock and roll way, in a poetic way, in a lovable, humorous, amazing way, obviously it was a great time,' she said. 'Even when it was slightly on the wild side, he was always very tender with me. I was a precious little thing to him, so amongst the headiness, it was always very sweet.'
Awakening the Senses
In the 2019 documentary Mystify: Michael Hutchence, Kylie described Michael as 'a dark bad boy' and herself as 'the pure good girl.' She added that he was a deeply sensual person who awakened that side in her as well. 'Sex, love, food, drugs, music, travel, books, you name it, he wanted to experience it. As his partner, I got to experience a lot of that as well. If you're a sensual being, all of your senses need stimulation. He definitely awakened my desire for things in my world.'
The Painful Split
In the same documentary, Kylie opened up about their breakup, admitting she cannot recall exactly why it ended. 'Was it work, was it the drugs? I don't know. He was like a broken man,' she said. 'He was on all fours on the floor crying. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know what was happening. I just know he was a broken man. I'd never seen any man like that before. I left pretty confounded and destroyed and knew that was it. He broke my heart. I have to confess that the hurt stayed for quite a long time.'
After their split, Michael went on to date model Helena Christensen and later presenter Paula Yates, with whom he had a daughter, Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily Hutchence, born in 1996. He died by suicide a year later in 1997. Kylie attended his funeral in Sydney.
A Guardian Angel
In January 2026, Kylie shared an image of herself with Michael on what would have been his birthday. She has spoken about his death many times, claiming she feels he is still with her and has been a 'guardian angel' during some of her tours.
The three-part docuseries, titled Kylie, will be available to stream on Netflix from May 20.
