Meghan Markle has been savaged online by critics after announcing that her Netflix series ‘With Love, Meghan’ received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lifestyle Program. The show, which features recipes, crafts, and glimpses into her California life, has garnered mixed reviews and a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 38%.
Social media backlash and political criticism
Following the announcement, social media users and a US politician criticized the nomination. One user wrote: ‘She’s wasted no time getting around to crowing about her Daytime Emmy nomination for her contrived, critically panned, embarrassing flop.’ Another added: ‘You know… the obviously worthless Emmy that you can apply for yourself. The delusion runs deep with Meghan.’ A US politician went as far as to call the Emmy nominations ‘rigged’.
Royal commentator weighs in
Royal commentator Hilary Fordwich told Fox News: ‘Well, not so surprising when one considers these award bodies reward high-profile players who might garner the award's attention. Nevertheless, given how polarising MM is and that the show had completely lacklustre ongoing watching views, it is somewhat baffling.’ She added: ‘The really weak commercial traction of her show, with dreadfully low ongoing watching demonstrated by lack of audience appeal, doesn’t warrant such an award, but no doubt it will garner the aforementioned media attention.’
No evidence of impropriety
There is currently no evidence of impropriety in the Emmy nominations process. The Daily Express has approached the Emmy’s for comment. Meghan took to Instagram to congratulate her team, writing: ‘A huge congratulations to the amazing crew, producers, and team who worked on ‘With Love, Meghan’ on @netflix.’
