Maya Jama's life off-screen: Traitors star, exes and home

Maya Jama, 32, has been impressing fans as a Traitor on the BBC's Celebrity Traitors, ahead of the final episode airing tomorrow night. Known for hosting Love Island on ITV2, she is now proving her talent in the Scottish castle as part of the second series of the celebrity spin-off.

Early Life and Background

Maya was born on August 14, 1994, to a Swedish mum. At an early age, they moved to Sweden before returning to Bristol. Her dad was in prison for most of her childhood, and she had little contact with him during her early years.

In a 2017 interview with The Guardian, Maya said she did not really notice it being a problem. She said: "It was normal for me. My dad's side of my family was super-supportive and they did everything in their power to make me and my brother not feel like we were missing out on anything."

When she was 18, Maya moved to London to pursue a career in media, first as an actress, then as a TV presenter and fashion model.

Relationships and Personal Life

Maya's first public relationship was with British rapper Stormzy. The pair were together for five years until they parted ways in 2019. In 2023, the two reportedly reunited after being photographed holding hands, but split again in late 2024.

She was briefly engaged to NBA star Ben Simmons in 2021 after he proposed on Christmas Day. The couple reportedly split in the summer of 2022.

Her most recent relationship was with Manchester City footballer Ruben Dias. The couple met in 2024 at the MTV European Music Awards and shared a £4 million mansion in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. Their home was targeted during a burglary in January 2026 while Maya was in South Africa filming Love Island.

Dias confirmed their split in May 2026, writing on social media: "The reasons why we broke up are private and belong to us and we've both dealt with it in a very mature way."

Career Highlights

Maya originally wanted to be an actress but later realised a presenting career suited her better. She began hosting on the weekly music video countdown on JumpOff.TV, then worked on Sky UK and TRACE sports before hosting at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014. Shortly after, she was signed by MTV as a presenter for The Wrap Up.

She has since worked with the Brit Awards, appeared on Loose Women and RuPaul's Drag Race UK, and presented Radio 1's Greatest Hits on Saturdays, plus her own radio show on BBC Radio 1 from 2018 to 2020.

In 2022, she became the new host of Love Island UK, taking over from Laura Whitmore. She has continued hosting Love Island UK, Love Island All Stars, and Love Island Games. Maya also made her acting debut as Aisha in the second season of Netflix's The Gentlemen.

The Celebrity Traitors airs on BBC One and iPlayer, with the final set for Friday.
