Saturday Kitchen Host Matt Tebbutt Suffers Painful Lip Injury Before Live Show
Saturday Kitchen returned to BBC One screens this weekend, but host Matt Tebbutt faced an unexpected and painful setback just moments before the programme went live. The beloved cooking show, which aired on Saturday morning, April 11, saw Matt back at the helm after a recent stint in Australia.
A Painful Mishap in Rehearsal
During the broadcast, Matt revealed to drinks expert Helen McGinn that he had burnt his lips during the rehearsal period. "So I burnt my lips in rehearsal. Does it look like I’ve got fillers?" Matt asked Helen, who reassured him it wasn't visibly severe. "It doesn’t look bad at the moment," Helen replied, prompting Matt to share, "I’ve got a blister there. It only hurts when I talk."
The exchange turned light-hearted as Helen predicted, "It’s going to hurt later," and Matt quipped, "Shall I not talk?" Giggling, Helen added, "I don’t know if you can get away with that!" Trying to minimise movement of his sore lips, Matt redirected the conversation, saying, "Tell us about the wine," to which Helen humorously offered, "I’ll give you a straw later."
Matt's Humorous Take on the Injury
Matt continued with the banter, joking, "I’ll dribble it all out, like you’ve been at the dentist." Touching his injured lip, he added, "That’s what I feel like." Despite the discomfort, the show proceeded smoothly, featuring guests including chefs John Chantarasak, Niklas Ekstedt, and Thomasina Miers, as well as chart-topping singer Jack Savoretti, who participated in a viewer vote on food heaven versus food hell.
Matt's Return to Saturday Kitchen
This episode marked Matt's return to presenting duties after he spent time in Australia. Earlier in March, The One Show's Alex Jones had stepped in to host, accompanied by guests Mike Reid, Adejoké Bakare, Bryn Williams, and special guest Phil Wang. Although Matt appeared on the programme the previous week, he confirmed it was a pre-recorded episode, sharing updates from Australia with his Instagram followers.
Upon his return in March, the 52-year-old presenter paused to commend Alex Jones, remarking, "Before we go on with our usual nonsense, we should say how well Alex did last week. Well done, Alex Jones." Saturday Kitchen continues to air every Saturday at 10am on BBC One, bringing culinary delights and occasional unexpected moments to viewers nationwide.
