Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith has admitted he has not yet been contacted about returning for the show's 60th anniversary. Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor from 2010 to 2013, said he is unaware of any plans involving him and praised incoming showrunner Russell T Davies.
Speaking to CNET, Smith said: 'Like, who knows? I mean, look, I'm pleased Russell's back. I think he oversaw one of the great 10 years of Doctor Who.' He added: 'I haven't heard and no one's picked up the phone yet.'
Smith's tenure included the 50th anniversary special, which featured the return of his predecessor David Tennant. The 60th anniversary will be overseen by Davies, who previously ran the show from 2005 to 2010.
The BBC has pushed back against reports that it will cede creative control of Doctor Who to Davies. A BBC representative said: 'We're incredibly excited about the future of Doctor Who. BBC Studios is ultimately responsible for delivering the show and this production partnership is about long-term investment.'
Davies's return follows the departure of current Doctor Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall next year. Doctor Who: Flux airs weekly on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
