An under-appreciated period drama series has been hailed as a 'masterpiece' and one of the best adaptations ever made. Pachinko, based on the best-selling novel by Min Jin Lee, has earned a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 92% fan score, with viewers calling it the 'best show ever'.
The historical epic follows four generations of a Korean immigrant family, beginning with a forbidden romance that spans Korea, Japan, and America. Created for television by Soo Hugh, known for The Killing and The Terror, the series is praised for its exceptional casting, direction, acting, and cinematography.
Fans have taken to social media to express their admiration. One wrote: 'Simply a masterpiece. This is much better than any other K-drama.' Another added: 'Wow! What a truly mind-blowing rendition of one of the most moving novels in recent history.' Some even prefer the show to the book, citing the music and visuals as enhancing the story.
The series, which premiered its first season in 2022 and the second in 2024, is streaming on Apple TV+. Viewers hope the acclaim will convince Apple to produce a third season.
