Channel 5 has confirmed the production of a new two-part factual drama series, currently titled Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards, which will star acclaimed actor Martin Clunes in the lead role. The series aims to delve deeply into the shocking scandal that brought down one of British television's most prominent figures, former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards.
Exploring a Double Life and Betrayal of Trust
The drama will focus on how Edwards, who presented News at Ten for decades and announced major national events like the death of Queen Elizabeth II, led a double life that culminated in his guilty plea to making indecent images of children in July 2024. Ben Frow, chief content officer at Channel 5, emphasised the significance of the story, stating, "This is an important and shocking story of how a man in a position of power and trust betrayed that status."
Frow added that the series will incorporate exclusive interviews with key individuals involved in the initial reporting and investigation, aiming to uncover the human cost behind the headlines. This project marks a first for Channel 5, as it represents a close collaboration between the channel's factual and scripted teams.
Timeline of the Scandal and Downfall
The scandal began in July 2023 when The Sun reported allegations that a top BBC star had paid a teenager for sexual pictures. Days later, Edwards' wife publicly identified him as the presenter at the centre of the claims, leading to his resignation in April 2024 on medical advice. Following a Metropolitan Police investigation, he was charged in June 2024.
In July 2024, Edwards admitted guilt to making indecent images of children, specifically possessing 41 photographs on WhatsApp, including seven classified as the most serious type. The BBC revealed that it had been informed in November 2023, when Edwards was suspended, that he had been arrested on suspicion of serious offences, five months before his resignation.
In a statement, the broadcaster asserted that Edwards would have been dismissed immediately if he had been charged while still employed at the corporation.

The series will be directed by Michael Samuels, known for his work on projects such as The Windermere Children and Any Human Heart.
