Mark Chapman's 'miserable' demeanour while presenting Match of the Day on Saturday is reportedly linked to his fractured relationship with BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski.
Chapman, 53, who is in a relationship with MOTD colleague Kelly Cates, appeared 'bored rigid' during the BBC One broadcast, with viewers noting a change in his on-screen behaviour. One remarked he seemed like he was 'counting down the days until he can collect his pension'.
Viewers Notice Chapman's Detached Attitude
As the programme began, Chapman, known as 'Chappers', introduced his guests - Arsenal legend Martin Keown and former Manchester City defender Steph Houghton - before the opening fixture. However, his detached and downbeat attitude overshadowed the broadcast.
According to the Daily Mail, a key factor in Chapman's sombre spirits is his strained rapport with Kay-Jelski. It is believed that Chapman 'can't stand' Kay-Jelski and his management methods, especially after the heavily criticised redundancies within the department last month.
Source Claims Poor Atmosphere Behind the Scenes
A source told the Daily Mail: "Mark cannot stand Alex. He doesn't like what he is doing with the whole sports set up. The cuts Alex has made have left a horrible atmosphere in the department, the production teams have been left devastated and Mark is fond of many of them. The behind the scenes misery has now spilled over to what happens in front of the camera."
Chapman has been a permanent co-host of the show since Gary Lineker's exit at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. Cates and Gabby Logan are his fellow hosts on the Saturday night programme. The three were chosen by Kay-Jelski, yet despite getting the chance on the biggest platform, Chapman allegedly still 'hates' him.
Social Media Criticism Follows Broadcast
His performance sparked criticism on social media. One X user wrote: "Football is supposed to be fun. For God's sake, can somebody tell Match of the Day? Just look at the way Mark Chapman opens the show. Flat. Lifeless. Almost uninterested."
Another added: "Watching Match of the Day these days is like observing a post-mortem conducted by a forensic pathologist who regretted his career choice years ago and is now just counting down the days until he can collect his pension. His dry, bored, dead-eyed delivery is sucking the life out of a programme devoted to a sport that should be anything but lifeless."
A further comment read: "#MOTD is hilarious tonight! Chappers looks like he's lost 20 quid and found a quid! He's so blunt it's laughable! I don't think he realises he gets an extra hour in bed tonight!"
"Wow Mark Chapman on #MOTD , absolute zero charisma, what a miserable presenter! Awful," a third user added.
