BBC host Mark Chapman has voiced his frustration over a particular aspect of World Cup TV coverage that is already irritating him just days into the tournament in North America. The presenter lamented the frequency of cutaways to celebrities attending matches.
Chapman's Complaint
Speaking on The Sports Agents podcast alongside Gabby Logan and Nedum Onuoha, Chapman asked: 'Am I being a bit grumpy here when I say I'm fed up with cutaways to famous people in the crowd?' He acknowledged that this practice occurs in the UK as well, but expressed annoyance at seeing celebrities like David Beckham, Tom Cruise, and Rod Stewart repeatedly during broadcasts.
Chapman noted that host broadcasters supply the footage, so neither BBC nor ITV are responsible for the cutaways. He added that during live games, he often doesn't recognize the people shown and has to be told who they are.
Positive View on Matches
Despite his criticism, Chapman is enjoying the tournament. He praised the United States vs. Paraguay match, calling it 'really entertaining,' and highlighted strong performances from the Netherlands, Japan, and Ecuador.
