Married at First Sight UK has made history by featuring its first same-sex wedding in the latest series. The E4 reality show, which pairs complete strangers based on expert matching, saw 39-year-old Matt and 27-year-old Daniel tie the knot in a commitment ceremony on 31 August.
The fifth series of the UK version has adopted changes from the Australian counterpart, which first featured a same-sex marriage in 2016. Legally binding marriages have been replaced with lifelong commitment ceremonies, though they still include traditional wedding elements such as speeches and cake.
Viewers took to social media to celebrate the milestone. One fan wrote: 'I’m emotionally connected to Matt and Daniel on Married at First Sight UK already.' Another added: 'Matt and Daniel are lovely together. I really want it to work for them.'
Some fans contrasted the show with Love Island, whose bosses have claimed featuring same-sex couples would be logistically difficult. One viewer joked: 'Love Island: Having gay contestants would be “logistically difficult”. Married at First Sight UK: Hold my f***in’ beer.'
Married at First Sight continues at 9pm on 1 September on E4, with previous episodes available on All 4.
