Luke Grimes has hinted that his character Kayce Dutton's past could create tension with his fellow law enforcers in the new Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals: A Yellowstone Story. The series, which airs weekly on CBS and Paramount+, follows the former Navy SEAL and livestock agent as he joins an elite squad of US Marshals delivering justice across Montana.
While Kayce is committed to enforcing the law and being a good father to his teenage son Tate, he is also grappling with inner demons. He has lost his wife Monica and holds secrets about the Dutton family's dark past, including the murder of his brother Jamie by his sister Beth. Grimes told Reach: 'I think that's some of the suspense that's being created, I think he's always thinking that he's pretty close to being found out.'
The actor added that the Duttons' shady behaviour will 'create a bit of a rift between him and the rest of the marshals.' The spin-off also explores the fragile relationship between the Duttons and the Broken Rock Reservation, with Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty reprising their roles as Chairman Thomas Rainwater and his aide Mo.
Grimes praised the return of familiar faces, saying: 'It definitely really grounds the show, and fans of the original show will definitely feel the Yellowstone vibes because of those guys.' The series premiere saw Rainwater severely injured by a bomb at a protest, leaving fans to wonder if he will survive and how the Reservation will respond to Kayce's presence.
