The sandwich maker was dumped from the villa in a shock twist on Tuesday night after failing to win the public vote. His relationship with Lucie had drawn criticism from viewers, with complaints lodged with Ofcom and charity Women's Aid speaking out.
Joe's family defended him on social media, with Jessica Garratt writing: 'How could anyone portray him as anything other than a loving beautiful boy?' The Instagram post acknowledged some criticism was 'warranted' but said the majority was 'unfair and non representative of Joe's true character'.
A Love Island spokesperson told the Mirror: 'What airs on Love Island is a fair and accurate representation of what happens in the villa.' Joe later apologised for his words, while Lucie was left in tears after his departure, saying: 'I'm gutted. He's literally been my rock in here.'
