Lorraine Kelly Forced to Pause Live Broadcast Following Eurovision Misinformation

Popular Scottish television presenter Lorraine Kelly was compelled to abruptly interrupt her live Friday morning show after inadvertently disseminating incorrect details to her audience. The 66-year-old host had assured viewers that Culture Club legend Boy George might be appearing at this year's Eurovision Song Contest, representing Italy alongside an Italian vocalist.

On-Air Correction During Fashion Segment

However, during a style discussion with fashion expert Mark Heye, focusing on top high street selections, Lorraine suddenly halted the conversation. Placing a finger on her earpiece to receive an update, she announced: 'Mark, I've just had breaking news. Boy George is not Italy. It's not us either, it's San Marino.' Emphasising the importance of accuracy, she added: 'You have to get these things right, it's really important.'

Lorraine then humorously referenced the United Kingdom's historically poor track record in the competition, stating: 'I'm almost glad that he's not doing the UK because we never win anyway.' Quickly shifting focus back to fashion bargains, she admitted: 'I know and it's all very embarrassing, anywho let's get back to this.'

Context and Details of Boy George's Eurovision Participation

To provide context, the UK last secured a Eurovision victory in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves' song Love Shine a Light. Contrary to the initial claim, Boy George is reportedly set to perform a track titled Superstar with Senhit, who previously competed for San Marino in 2021, achieving 22nd place.

San Marino, a microstate entirely encircled by Italy, hopes that Boy George's international fame will enhance their performance in the contest. A source disclosed to the Daily Star: 'San Marino's team are thrilled they have managed to get Boy George to put himself forward. It's quite the coup. Getting such a big name to represent them would be an incredible moment. It would be such a big moment for San Marino.'

The 2025 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled for May in Vienna, Austria.

ITV Schedule Adjustments and Broader Implications

This on-air slip occurred shortly after revelations that Lorraine's long-running programme will be temporarily cancelled for a week next month. Both Lorraine and Loose Women will be removed from the ITV schedule to accommodate the Cheltenham Festival horse racing event, commencing on March 10.

From Monday, March 9, adjustments include:

  • Good Morning Britain extending its broadcast until 10am.
  • This Morning airing from 10am.
  • Coverage of the prestigious races starting at 12:30pm.

This schedule modification follows significant cost-cutting measures at ITV, resulting in over 200 staff redundancies. These changes are attributed to declining viewer numbers and a general transition towards online streaming services for television consumption. Lorraine typically airs on ITV weekdays from 9:30am.
