The Bombing of Pan Am 103, a six-part drama recently added to Netflix, originally aired on BBC One to critical acclaim. It focuses on the parallel investigations by British and American governments into the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
How many died in the Lockerbie bombing?
Pan Am Flight 103 was a transatlantic service from Frankfurt to Detroit via London and New York. On December 21, 1988, shortly after 7pm, a bomb destroyed the Boeing 747 while it flew over Lockerbie. All 243 passengers and 16 crew aboard were killed. Large sections of the aircraft crashed into a residential street, killing an additional 11 people on the ground, bringing the total to 270 fatalities.
Most victims were American (190), with 32 from the UK. Other nationalities included Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, France, West Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Philippines, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Investigations and convictions
A three-year joint police and FBI investigation concluded in 1991 that two Libyan nationals were responsible. Arrest warrants were issued. After protracted negotiations, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi handed over the two men for trial in 1999. Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted in 2001 on 270 counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
In 2003, Gaddafi accepted responsibility and paid compensation to victims' families. Al-Megrahi was released by the Scottish Government on compassionate grounds in 2009 after a prostate cancer diagnosis. He died in 2012.
In 2020, US authorities indicted Libyan national Abu Agila Mohammad Mas'ud Kheir Al-Marimi for his alleged role. The US obtained custody of him in 2022. He appeared in court in February 2025, where his lawyers sought to suppress an alleged confession made at a Libyan detention facility in 2012, claiming it was under duress. His trial in Washington DC is scheduled later this year.
