Payne, 31, died after falling from a third-floor balcony at a Buenos Aires hotel, with local authorities reporting that police had been called to the scene due to an aggressive man possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Many fans expressed disbelief upon hearing the news. Lara Pinto, a 21-year-old political science student from Belgium, initially thought it was a hoax. Floortje Jansen, 26, from the Netherlands, said the news broke something in her that will never fully heal. Abby Pachai, 28, from Ontario, Canada, noted that reports of Payne’s recent mental health and substance abuse struggles made the tragedy feel more plausible.
Payne had been open about his battles with addiction and suicidal thoughts during and after his time with the band. He revealed in July 2023 that he had spent 100 days in rehab and was six months sober. However, recent allegations from his ex-fiancée Maya Henry, including a fictional book inspired by true events and a cease-and-desist order, have complicated fans’ feelings. Pinto said she felt disgusted by the abuse allegations but still mourns the person she looked up to.
Fans have also expressed concern for Henry, with Sarah Smits, 24, from Belgium, condemning the hate directed at her online. Pachai believes the tragedy highlights the pressures of child stardom, noting that Payne was only 16 when One Direction formed. She argued that the music industry is to blame for taking from artists and discarding them.
Payne struggled to find solo success after the band’s 2016 breakup, unlike bandmates Niall Horan and Harry Styles. At a memorial in London’s Hyde Park, fan Jordi McMahon, 24, said she could relate to his mental health struggles. Jansen spoke for many, saying she wished for him to get better and make amends, and that the grief feels like losing a part of her childhood.
Directioners have found solace in each other, with memorials taking place worldwide. Jansen emphasised that the One Direction community is vast and deeply connected, providing support during this difficult time.
